The Basics Of Dieting: What Everyone Should Know!

Everyone wants to eat healthy and be healthy, but how and what should we eat? The most basic and simple approach to losing weight that is behind EVERY diet out there is you have to eat less calories than you burn. To do this you need to know how many calories you are eating and the problem with this is most people play the guessing game.

If your body is burning 2000 calories a day, it doesnt matter what you eat, if you eat more calories than that number you will put on weight. You could eat 2500 calories of the healthiest foods and by the end of the week be a pound heavier. Every extra 3500 calories you eat is an extra pound, remember that. Also remember, every 3500 calories that you BURN, you lose a pound. This is the basics of dieting.

What I would recommend doing is before you start a diet, write down all the foods you are eating, (the caloric amounts.) Don’t worry about fats, carbs and proteins just yet, just see how many calories you are eating. No on the first day check your weight. Count your calories for two weeks and then weigh yourself again.

If you are the same weight, the amount of calories per day you have been eating is equaling the amount of calories you are burning.

If you are heavier you are eating more calories than you are burning. For every pound you have gained that is an extra 3500 calories per pound. So if you had put on 2 pounds that is a pound per week or 3500 extra calories per week, which also equals 500 extra per day (500×7=3500) So now we know we need to cut back 3500 calories a week, or 500 a day, and 7000 every two weeks, all meaning the same thing.

If you have lost weight, that means you are burning more calories than you are eating and the same principles apply. 3500 calories = a pound so you can work out how many calories you are burning a day.

This is the basics of dieting or the simple science of our bodies. Once you know how many calories you are burning, (say it is 2000) you can easily adjust your diet to achieve your goals. You would then know you have to eat 1500 a day to lose a pound a week. Or 1750 to lose half a pound. If you wanted to maintain your weight you would eat the exact amount you are burning. I am repeating the concepts to ensure I have made the point clear. Don’t ever get tricked into fad diets, because in the end, all our bodies work the same way when it comes to eating and burning calories.

One thing you have to watch out for with the basics of dieting, is body adaptation. This is when your metabolism gets used to eating a certain amount of calories and would actually end up burning less calories. To stop this natural occurrence in our bodies we have to shift our calories.
