At present, in 2009, there are more overweight people in America than ever before. Instead of doing the wise thing and eating a balanced, healthy diet, many of these overweight people want very quick results, and resort to fad diets, which may work in the short term, with a quick weight loss.
More often than not, a quick weight loss will result in putting that weight back on very quickly afterwards, as most of that “weight’ is NOT FAT LOSS but water loss. Many of these diets are widely advertised, and many people are so desperate to lose weight and lose fat, that they fall for the false advertising. So let us examine some of the most popular ‘fad diets’, and see if they do work;
Some of the most popular fad diets today are :
• The Grape Diet advocates that you only eat grapes (any kind), without the pips, and you only drink water. Many cancer patients who are desperate for a cure believe that this diet will shrink their tumours, but there is no scientific proof that it does. Because of one’s quick weight lose, it does help a Type 2 Diabetic, but then if on e loses weight on any diet, one’s sugar levels automatically go down. This diet was originally brought to the United States by a woman from South Africa called Johanna Brandt in 1926 who wanted to share the message about how highly nutritious grapes can be to cancer patients. Some patients have sworn by this diet saying tumours and cysts have disappeared, and it is a good detox diet, but most dieters who lost 5 pounds within a week quickly put the weight back on.
• The Mono Diet is as it says – “mono” meaning at each mealtime only one food TYPE can be eaten, (either proteins, or carbs or veggies) so the best thing about this fad diet is that it is really easy to prepare and most dieters have lost a quick 5 pounds in 5 days. The belief behind this diet is that with consuming only one food group at each meal, the body will easily digest the food.
• The Grapefruit Diet is one of the most well known fad diets around. The grapefruit itself is well known for its fat loss properties, and fat burning enzymes and this diet advocates that the dieter eat half a grapefruit before every meal. One also has to limit one’s calories to only 800 per day, which many experts believe is an unhealthy amount. So again, a quick weight loss will be achieved, btu as soon as the diet is stopped the weight piles back on too quickly.
• The Caveman Diet is also known by many other names such as the Paleolithic Diet or the Ancient diet, and the belief is that if we eat what cavemen were able to gather or hunt hundreds of years ago it will benefit our health. (Today we would be doing our gathering in a grocery store!) Many people have been very successful on this diet, and it is categorised under ‘fad diets’ but upon further research one can live on this diet for a long period of time. The benefits, apart from fat loss and weight loss are a reduced sugar level and lower cholesterol levels. The diet excludes nearly all carbohydrates, so for some this is too difficult to stick to. You can have as much meat or fish as you want to, plus eggs and fruit.
• The Cabbage Soup Diet was invented in hospitals for those patients who were too overweight to undergo surgery. One is allowed to consume as much of the cabbage soup (which also has celery, herbs, one onion, broccoli) per day, plus every day one is allowed something different, for instance on one day one can have bananas and skim milk, the next day only steak etc. The diet is restrictive and hard to maintain for longer than 7 days.
• The Negative Calorie Diet is a diet where the dieter can choose to eat only foods which are known to burn fat, such as most fruits, and most vegetables which contain very few calories. This diet can help one lose virtually one pound per day, but restricts food intake and is every similar to many other fad diets.
• The ‘Zone’ Diet is another fad diet which became very popular through the media as at one time it seemed as though every celebrity and Hollywood star was on this diet. This is not an easy program to follow as one has to stick to the exact foods it suggests, to be eaten at exactly the correct times for one to ‘get into the zone’. One has to consume a certain ratio of proteins to starches plus count calories – a lot of thinking and concentration, so many do not stay long on this fad diet.
There are many diets ‘out there’ being advertised on the television, in magazines, and they all promise the earth to the desperate dieter (the ‘earth’ being the promise that you will lose all of the fat and weight that you need to lose) but almost all of these diets work for about seven days, and then they are either too difficult or rigid to stick to, or the unhealthy side effects become too difficult to bear, and are not worth the quick fat loss.
There are much healthier choices you can make instead of wasting your time and money on a fad diet. A healthy lifelong eating plan is the best way to go, so that your body gets the benefit of a wide range of foods from all of the food groups. The top recommended diet can be found here. It is the most popular downloaded download right now, and is so for a reason. It teaches you not only what to eat, but how much and WHEN to eat. This way, your metabolism is working throughout the day, which burns more calories,.. Something that we all want!! Learn more here or you can read our review!
