Our feet – how many of us give our feet the attention they really need?? after all, they absorb six times our body weight! They support us when standing, running or jumping. The average person walks up to four miles a day, and the intricate foot is made up of 24 bones, many small muscles, nearly two hundred ligaments and blood vessels.
In fact the feet are so important that when viewed by a trained eye, they can indicate the state of our general health. A foot doctor (podiatrist) can pinpoint where we have disease or other medical problems in our body, by reading and feeling our feet.
A reflexologist can locate zones in our feet, identify where we have disease and through pressure on that part of our foot can relieve the stress in the specific part of our body. Foot pain can signify that you have a problem somewhere else in your body. As Socrates once said “if our feet hurt, we hurt all over”. It is imperative that you take good care of your feet, and it is never too late to start! Click here to learn about a diet that improves your overall health, including your feet!
Foot Care begins with washing your feet thoroughly, with a strong natural soap, making sure to wash in between all of your toes. You can either do this in your daily bath, or soak your weary feet in a warm to hot foot bath. There are various good foot scrubs on the market, or you can make your own using sugar as an exfolient, and equal parts of baking powder, epsom salts and a few drops of fragrant essential oil. Look for essential oils such as lavender, gardenia, mint, spearmint, or crush herbs such as parsley or spearmint and even flower petals. Soak your feet for at least thirty minutes. You may use a soft sponge, and never rub harshly on your feet. After the soak, dry your feet in a soft fluffy towel, making sure to dry completely, and in between every toe. Always make sure your feet are dry, as foot fungus can occur when feet are left wet, or stay wet in shoes. This is also known as ‘athlete’s foot’, which can also be caused by sharing towels, shoes or using a public shower.
When your feet are clean and dry, inspect them carefully. Check for any red rough patches, or dry cracking heels. These areas can start to bleed if not looked after. Your toenails should not be discoloured, and the skin underneath should not be swollen or red. If you notice cracked heels or any other problems, the first thing is to make sure that your shoes are not too tight fitting. Buy a foot moisturizing cream made specifically to treat callouses, and apply twice daily. Some socks and shoes can also cause foot eczema. Try not to scratch the skin as it will bleed. Buy a hydrocortisone cream over the counter & rub on the affected parts.
If you notice big raised bumps underneath your feet, these could be corns. There are three recommended treatments for corns which are Salactic Film, Viranol and Duofilm.
Foot problems can be too serious for home treatment. See a podiatrist immediately if you have any of the following:
• Painful bones in your feet.
• If you feel you have twisted or strained your ankle.
• If you are diabetic and notice any foot ulcers or red swollen areas.
• If you feel pain in your arches when walking or running.
• If your toes feel like they are burning , you may have gout, from an incorrect diet.
Many foot problems can be avoided by the correct nutritious diet. This is extremely important if you develop diabetes or the Above mentioned gout.
