			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Insomnia &#8211; it happens to us all in our lifetime, and to most of us we don’t take the term too seriously.  For some, it can totally destroy the quality of our lives, and to others like  the famous and talented Heath Ledger, trying to cope with insomnia killed him prematurely, as he reached for more and more prescribed medications while not able to sleep.</p>

<p>With too many of these dangerous drugs, he fell asleep – forever. The tragedy of Michael Jackson’s death has hit us all very hard.  No one knew, except perhaps Michael Jackson’s doctor how Jackson was struggling to sleep.  <span id="more-81"></span></p>
<p>He knew he had to be awake, aware and alert for his upcoming performances, and how could he be these things with no sleep?  Obviously all the ‘usual’ sleep medications had no effect on him, and like many others reached, begged and was prescribed with the deathly drug Diprivan.  How, we ask does anyone get to this stage, this desperate stage of what almost amounts to killing oneself for sleep?</p>
<p>Insomnia – well first let’s look at the causes. One can be experiencing a lot of anxiety and stress in one’s life (see our article on STRESS); it will help you deal with stress and how to stop worrying.  If we can do this naturally, we shall not have to turn to strong medications to help us physically get to sleep.   The ironic thing is that lack of sleep can actually lead to depression, anxiety and stress so it becomes a vicious cycle. One can only think with Jackson and Ledger’s fortunes they made in their careers, which they could have afforded the very best mental health experts to help them deal with these problems, instead of not sleeping because of the problems, leading to the drug overdoses.  There are also many physical causes of Insomnia. Women experience many hormonal disturbances such as menstruation, menopause, cramps, mood changes or pregnancy.  Over the age of 60 the body decreases one’s natural level of Melatonin. Illnesses such as arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure and symptoms like painful leg cramps, pain in the body anywhere will obviously prevent us from falling asleep comfortably.  Genetics do cause a role in insomnia but scientific researchers cannot find the reason behind this thinking. Seemingly insignificant things like muscle twitches, oversleeping in the day, jet lag or changing a work shift can also cause insomnia.</p>
<p>Insomnia cures are what we are dealing with in this article – cures which will help you NOT to take strong harmful prescribed medications. These are natural cures which will guide and help you get a full night’s sleep.  Medication should only be used as a very last option – so try these cures first!</p>

<li>Practise mental relaxation techniques. Find a spot in your home which you love, and get in your most comfortable position.  Close your eyes and relax your body. <li>Yoga works wonders for eliminating stress.</li>
<li>Physical exercise produces chemicals in our bodies which improve our mood and help us feel physically and mentally ready for sleep.</li>
<li>Sip some warm hot chocolate, Milo or Ovaltine before bed.</li>
<li>Soft relaxing music helps us get to sleep too.</li>
<li>Make sure your bedroom and bed area is comfortable and free of clutter.</li>
<li>The cooler your bedroom is the better you will sleep, and in the hot summertime a fan is a must – some even find the sound soothing!</li>
<li>Dark is usually a prerequisite for sleep, make sure your curtains are drawn.</li>
<li>Do not have naps during the day, however tempting.</li>
<li>If you can’t control outside noise use earplugs.</li>
<li>Try and sleep on your side to prevent snoring.</li>
<li>Do not use alcohol to try and sleep, and never ever mix alcohol with any drugs, even if prescribed.</li>
<li>Quit smoking, not only for the obvious reasons but it affects your whole respiratory system and breathing while sleeping.</li>
<li>There is a natural hormone one can take called Melatonin, this is safe and should not harm you.<!--more--></li>

<p>Ambien, Butisol Sodium, Carbrital, Dalmane, Doral, Halcion, Lunesta, Plasidyl, Prosom, Restoril, Rozerem, Seconal, Sonata.</p>
